Formula and calculation method#
Finished mix volume = paved area × compacted depth. Estimated mass = volume × entered compacted density × (1 + allowance). Cost combines entered mix price per ton, labor per area, optional base/removal rates, fixed costs and tax.
US customary and metric inputs use one internal SI calculation path. Each displayed quantity is converted after the calculation. Presets only fill editable inputs; no undocumented material, performance or cost adjustment is made.
Worked example#
A 50 ft × 12 ft driveway at 3 in compacted thickness has 150 ft³ of finished asphalt. Its tonnage and price depend on your density, material allowance and local entered rates.

Selecting inputs and project assumptions#
The input units change together when you switch measurement systems. A project preset is a starting point, not an instruction to buy a product or select a construction assembly. Local materials, engineering plans and supplier quotations have priority over illustrative defaults.

Assumptions and limitations#
The tool does not obtain local prices, determine pavement thickness or design drainage/base. The editable default rates are illustrations only; the final scope and quote depend on conditions, access and contractor.
Use this result for preliminary planning. Measure the actual project, obtain the required design or specification, confirm available product sizes and tolerances, and verify purchases with the supplier or contractor. A calculation cannot inspect site conditions or guarantee a finished quantity.
